Brown on a label and brown in your hand are two different things
When I put three brown upholstery offcuts next to each other, velvet, wide wale corduroy and boucle, in the shade they look almost the same. Move them to the window and they turn into three different colours. Velvet has a pile that lies in one direction and shifts in brightness with every movement. Corduroy alternates light and shadow along the rib, so from a distance it reads lighter than it is. Boucle traps shadow inside the loops and always adds depth.
Online shops describe colour with one word from a label. In my workshop colour is mostly surface, because I take the fabric as it left the furniture factory and I never order it by the roll for a collection. The brown I have today comes from one specific offcut. When it runs out, I cannot buy the same one again.
This matters when you choose a bag. Brown with texture forgives far more than flat brown: dust, marks from a jacket zip and traces from setting the bag down on a bench are much harder to see. A smooth dark surface shows everything.
Chocolate, mocha, caramel, cognac, taupe
These names are used interchangeably and they are not interchangeable at all.
- Chocolate
- Very dark and saturated, usually cool. Behaves like black in an outfit, only softer. Works with white, cream and navy.
- Mocha
- A mid brown muted with grey. The least demanding of the five, which is why it is the easiest one to wear with a cool wardrobe.
- Caramel
- Light and clearly warm, with a yellow undertone. Daytime and casual, very good with denim and cream knitwear.
- Cognac
- Mid brown with a red note. This is the shade people say looks more ginger in real life than in photos. It often does, especially in sunlight.
- Taupe
- Grey brown, cool and muted. The hardest one to name and the easiest one to wear.
If black, navy and grey rule your wardrobe, go for chocolate, mocha or taupe. If you have plenty of khaki, cream and burgundy, caramel and cognac will sit better. That is the only rule on this page that really holds: temperature of the shade matters, its name does not.
What to wear with a brown bag
With black. Once treated as a mistake, now one of the safest combinations. One condition: the two colours have to differ in texture or in proportion. A smooth black jacket with a ribbed brown bag looks deliberate. Smooth on smooth, fifty fifty, looks like an accident.
With navy. A classic built on warm against cool. It works nearly always, with one exception: very dark navy next to chocolate brown merges into one dark patch in photos and under artificial light.
With grey. This one is genuinely disputed and I will not pretend otherwise. Mid grey next to mid brown looks muddy. You need to pull the brightness apart: light ash grey with deep chocolate, or the other way round.
With white and cream. The safest pairing for spring and summer, because it takes all the heaviness out of brown.
With autumn colours. Mustard, olive, rust and burgundy are natural company for caramel and cognac. With cool browns, bottle green and wine work better than mustard.
Jewellery. Warm brown does not oblige you to wear gold. Silver next to cognac looks more modern, it just helps to repeat that cool note somewhere else, in a scarf or in the colour of a belt.
Do your shoes and belt have to match
No. Matching bag, belt and shoes in one identical shade of brown reads as stiff today, not as elegant. It is enough to keep your accessories in the same temperature, all warm or all cool. A brown bag is perfectly happy with black boots, white trainers or beige ankle boots.
One thing worth knowing in advance: light browns worn against raw dark denim can pick up a stain where the bag rubs the leg. That is not a fault of a particular bag, every light fabric behaves that way next to undyed off indigo. If you live in dark jeans, pick a deeper brown or a patchwork where the mark will not show.
Five outfits for autumn
Everyday: straight jeans, white t-shirt, khaki jacket and a caramel corduroy bag. The rib does all the work here, because everything else is smooth.
For the office: navy trousers, an ecru shirt and a chocolate bag big enough for documents. Dark brown is less severe than black and holds the same level of formality.
A cold walk: a heavy cream jumper, dark jeans and a brown and grey corduroy backpack. The backpack takes the weight off one shoulder and the shade sits well with both warm and cool layers.
Evening: a black dress and a small brown velvet bag. The only contrast that works here is a contrast of surfaces, matte velvet against smooth knit.
Between seasons: a linen dress in ecru, sandals or white trainers and a caramel bag. That is the answer to whether brown is only for autumn. It is not. It feels heavy only when everything around it is dark.
What I have in brown right now, and what I do not
Every bag I make is a single piece, so stock changes week by week. Right now all the bags in earthy tone bags and in honey bags have found their homes. I am leaving the links, because more brown offcuts are waiting in the workshop and those categories will fill up again.
In brown I currently have two backpacks: a brown and grey corduroy backpack and a honey corduroy backpack. Upholstery corduroy is thick enough that both of them keep their shape when empty.
If you are after a specific shade of brown for a specific coat, write to me through the contact page. More about the material itself is in my piece on upholstery fabric in a bag, and if corduroy is what caught your eye, I wrote separately about corduroy bags.
Frequently asked questions
- Does a brown bag look ageing?
- What ages an outfit is a shade chosen against the rest of your wardrobe, not the colour itself. The usual culprit is warm cognac next to cool grey and silver. With a cool wardrobe, mocha, taupe or chocolate will feel current.
- Does a brown bag go with a black jacket?
- Yes, as long as they differ in texture or the brown is clearly lighter than the black. The worst version is two smooth dark surfaces in equal proportions.
- Which shade of brown is the most versatile?
- Mocha and taupe, because they carry grey in them and do not force a temperature on the rest of the outfit. Cognac photographs best and is the most demanding to wear.
- Can you wear a brown bag in summer?
- Yes. With linen, white and ecru brown stops being autumnal. It only feels heavy in the company of dark colours.
- Will a light brown bag stain against dark jeans?
- With raw denim it can, as with any light fabric. The mark builds slowly in one spot, so with new dark trousers it helps to carry the bag in your hand.
Summary
Brown is not a difficult colour. What is difficult is calling it by one name when that name covers cool taupe and reddish cognac alike. Pick the temperature that suits your wardrobe and leave the rest to texture, because texture decides whether a bag looks flat or alive. To see what I have in brown today, look at the backpacks, and for a neutral shoulder bag instead, the grey bags are the closest thing.
