Grey wide-wale corduroy tote bag
This corduroy bag is cut from one piece of wide-wale upholstery cord. The grey is clean, with no blue and no green underneath it, and the wale is broad enough to read from across the street.
The offcut came from a furniture factory. New, unused, simply too small to cover anything with. It was enough for one bag and its handles.
Dimensions: roughly 37 x 40 cm. Waterproof lining, one zipped pocket and one slip pocket, brick coloured drawstring at the top.

A corduroy bag made from fabric meant to cover an armchair
Upholstery corduroy differs from the dressmaking kind in wale width and in weight. This one has a wale several millimetres across and a pile dense enough that stroking it against the lie changes the shade to a lighter one. In a bag that means the fabric holds its form even when there is nothing inside.
What it is made of
The entire outer part, handles included, is the same grey corduroy. The wale runs the same way on the handles as on the front, so the transition between them is almost invisible.
The only colour besides grey is the drawstring in brick red. It is cotton, soft, tied in a bow at the side. Lining, zip and cord are new.
What fits inside
Roughly 37 x 40 cm. A4 goes in without folding, a 15 inch laptop does too, and there is still room for a flask between them.
Inside there is a zipped pocket and a slip pocket. It carries up to 8 kg, which is two days of shopping, but not a six pack of water.
Who it is for
The grey here is neutral enough that you do not have to build an outfit around it. It works for the commute, where a bag stands under a desk for eight hours and then goes to the shops.
Honestly: wide-wale corduroy picks up dust and pet hair more than smooth fabrics. A lint roller or a damp hand takes care of it, but it is worth knowing before you buy, especially if there is a cat at home.
How to care for it
Spot clean with a damp cloth, along the wale and not across it. Hand wash only, in lukewarm water. Dry flat. No tumble dryer and no iron, because the wale flattens and does not come back up.
Frequently asked questions
Does corduroy wear through at the corners?
Upholstery fabrics are engineered for abrasion, so they last longer than clothing corduroy. After a few years of daily use the pile on the bottom corners may smooth out. We repair those spots in the workshop for a fee.
Can I get the same bag in another colour?
We cannot sew this model to order in a different shade, because we depend on what arrives with the offcuts. Write to scoiattolo.biuro@gmail.com and we will check what is in the workshop.
Can the drawstring be removed?
It can be pulled out of the channel if you prefer the bag without a gathered top. The opening then stays flat across the full width.
