Powder pink, sage and cornflower patchwork bag
This patchwork bag came out of three separate upholstery offcuts that reached the workshop at different times. The top band is velvet in a muted powder pink. The bottom splits in two: sage chenille on the left, cornflower blue corduroy on the right.
We sewed it in Ciechanów, as a single piece. We will not repeat this combination, because all three offcuts are now used up.
Dimensions: roughly 37 x 40 cm. Waterproof lining inside, one zipped pocket and one slip pocket. The top gathers on a drawstring.

A patchwork bag we will not make a second time
Patchwork in our workshop is not a styling choice, it is what the material dictates. Upholstery offcuts arrive in random shapes and few of them are large enough to cut a whole bag from. So we join the pieces that get along with each other in colour.
What it is made of
The top band is upholstery velvet in powder pink. Smooth, matte, and in sunlight it shifts half a tone towards nude. The lower left panel is chenille in sage green, with a visible break in the weave that makes the colour look faded. The lower right is corduroy in cornflower blue, with a finer wale than in our wide-wale models.
The handles are made from grey cotton webbing rather than the bag fabric. That gives them less bulk and they sit better on the shoulder under a jacket. Lining, zip and cord are new and bought separately. What comes from salvage is the outer fabric, not the hardware.
What fits inside
Roughly 37 x 40 cm, so the front panel is clearly larger than a sheet of A4. A 15 inch laptop, a ring binder and a water bottle go in together, without forcing anything.
Inside there is a zipped pocket and a slip pocket for a phone and keys. The drawstring closes the top, so the contents are not on display on the tram. We rate it to 8 kg. Above that the seams and webbing start working differently than they should.
Who it is for
For someone who likes colour, but not the loud version of it. The pink, sage and cornflower here are all muted, so the bag sits comfortably with denim, grey and beige, and turns into a contrast piece against black.
What it will not do: it does not close with a zip and it has no stiffened base. This is a soft bag, it takes the shape of what you put in it. If you want a form that holds itself when empty, our wide-wale corduroy is the better choice.
How to care for it
Treat stains locally with a damp cloth and a drop of mild detergent. Wash by hand only, in lukewarm water. Dry flat, at room temperature. No tumble dryer and no iron, because velvet and chenille lose their texture that way.
Frequently asked questions
Is the bag waterproof?
The lining inside is waterproof. The upholstery fabric on the outside handles drizzle and splashes well, but it will soak through in heavy rain.
Can you make the same one in different colours?

Will the handles fit over a winter coat?
Yes, they are long enough to go over a thick jacket. The bag then hangs at roughly hip height.
