Grey boucle shopper bag
This grey shopper bag is made of boucle, a fabric built from small loops. Up close you can see two colours at once: the light grey of the loop and the darker backing showing through between them. From a distance the whole thing reads as a warm, broken grey.
We sewed it from a single upholstery offcut, handles included. The drawstring is mustard.
Dimensions: roughly 37 x 40 cm. Waterproof lining inside, one zipped pocket and one slip pocket.

A grey shopper bag with texture instead of a pattern
Boucle works differently from smooth fabrics. There is no print and no wale on it, the structure of the loops does all the work. That is why this bag looks one way in the morning under artificial light and another in the afternoon outdoors.
What it is made of
Upholstery boucle from an offcut from a furniture factory. The loops are small and densely set, which makes the surface springy and the material fairly thick. The bag stiffens slightly because of it and holds itself upright when empty.
The handles are cut from the same boucle, so they have real bulk and do not cut into the shoulder under load. The mustard drawstring is the only strong colour. Lining, zip and cord are new.
What fits inside
Roughly 37 x 40 cm. For shopping it takes two carrier bags emptied into it, for work a laptop with its charger and a ring binder.
Inside there is a zipped pocket and a slip pocket. It carries up to 8 kg. The drawstring lets you close the top when the bag is filled to the brim.
Who it is for
For someone who carries a lot but does not want to walk around with a sack. Boucle has enough texture that the bag still looks considered when it is stuffed full.
Honestly: a looped structure catches velcro, pet hair and human hair more than smooth velvet does. A lint roller takes it off, but with a dog at home you will be doing it more often.
How to care for it
Lift dirt with a damp cloth, pressing rather than rubbing, so you do not pull the loops out. Hand wash in lukewarm water, dry flat, at room temperature. No tumble dryer and no iron.
Frequently asked questions
Do the loops pull out?
Not in normal use. What can pull one out is something sharp, the zip on a carry-on bag for instance, or a cat’s claw. A single pulled loop goes back in with a needle, do not cut it off.
Is it grey or beige?
The backing is grey and the loops are lighter and slightly warm, so depending on the light the bag can look grey or broken with beige.
Will a 15 inch laptop fit?
Yes, together with the charger. There is no separate padded laptop compartment though, so for longer commutes a sleeve is worth having.
